When You Need to Rotate a PDF
Page orientation errors are one of the most common PDF problems. They happen when:
- A scanner captures pages in the wrong orientation (common with flatbed scanners)
- A document is created in landscape mode but the source app exports in portrait
- Someone scans a document upside-down or sideways
- A merged PDF combines pages with different orientations that weren't normalised
Rotation Options Explained
- 90° clockwise — rotates a landscape page to portrait (right side becomes the top)
- 90° counter-clockwise — rotates a landscape page to portrait (left side becomes the top)
- 180° — flips an upside-down page right-side-up
For a typical sideways scan, a single 90° rotation corrects it. For upside-down pages, use 180°. If you're unsure, use the thumbnail preview to confirm orientation before downloading.
Rotating Individual Pages vs All Pages
Many PDFs have mixed orientations — for example, a report where most pages are portrait but diagrams or spreadsheet tables are landscape. Our tool lets you rotate each page independently:
- Click individual page thumbnails to select only the pages you want to rotate
- Use "Select all" to rotate the entire document at once
- Different pages can have different rotation amounts in the same operation
Zero Quality Loss
PDF rotation is a metadata operation — it changes the rotation flag in the page object, not the actual image or text data. This means:
- No re-rendering happens — images and text stay at their original resolution
- File size remains unchanged
- Text remains selectable and searchable after rotation
After Rotating: Common Next Steps
- Fix a merged document — after rotating, use Merge PDFs to recombine with other correctly-oriented sections
- Compress before sharing — scanned PDFs with large images can be run throughCompress PDF to reduce size
- Extract text after correcting orientation — PDF to Text works best on correctly-oriented pages
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — select individual page thumbnails to rotate specific pages while leaving others unchanged.
No. Rotation is a metadata change — pages are not re-rendered, so there is zero quality loss.

Select each page individually and set the correct rotation for each. The final PDF preserves your per-page settings.
